Child Protection:
Despite a culture that accepts physical punishment for children, CWH encourages its staff not to resort to violence to reprimand a child. Instead children are counselled and encouraged to see why they have done wrong.
The boys and girls have rooms in separate buildings and are encouraged to see each other as brothers and sisters.
Child Participation:
As a small CBO, CWH continues to improve on its child participation record. Currently each child is able to make decisions concerning his/her own progress, both academic and personal. The children are made aware of issues relating to the home through meetings. There are not currently regular meetings held but there are plans to change this.
As in a family, the older children help look after younger children, for example, helping them study and playing with them. All children old enough to help are on a cleaning rota and from 14 everyone is expected to wash their own clothes regularly.
A former member of the home is on the board. No person in Nepal may sit on any board before reaching majority so there is no opportunity for a child on the board. However, there are plans to establish a ‘children’s club’, which will provide the children with the opportunity to elect a representative who can take their concerns to the director through formal meetings. Representatives of the children’s club will also be able to speak on behalf of CWH.
